About TALC
Founded in 1967, TALC is an ALL volunteer organization and has never had a paid employee! Incorporated in 1995, TALC is an affiliate of ProLiteracy, the largest literacy organization in the United States. In the last 15 years, we have trained over 850 tutors who have served over 1,000 students.
Recent figures show over 162,000 adults in Pierce County are functionally illiterate: they cannot read well enough to read a newspaper, assist their children with the homework, fill out a job application, understand doctor's instructions or use a computer.
Literacy is defined as "an individual's ability to read, write, and speak in English: to compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and to achieve one's goals, and develop one's knowledge and potential".
It is the foundation of learning.
23% of adults who were on public assistance became self-sufficient when enrolled in literacy programs. Adults in literacy programs improved their employment status by 29%.
Our services are free! The benefits... priceless!
TALC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) that receives no government funding. Generous organizations, foundations, members and private donors provide our financial support. Thanks to our special supporters: The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, The News Tribune, Walmart, and various local service organizations.
Every dollar donated to literacy gives back $33 to the local community
